An idea for VU 20 maybe ;) ...

A daily newspaper.

For, say, 1 PED/day you could subscribe to a daily paper. It would be added to your inventory, or come as a PM.

It could include such things as:

Winners of Scheduled events from the previous day.
Newly Created Socs.
Stock Prices (Close of previous days trading on 10-20 most commonly traded goods)
Classifieds (The reason that MA would do this....)

The Newspaper could be run like the banks or by MA. If they were sold like the banks, then "Reporters" could write articles that they deem fit and subscribe themselves to data feeds from MA (for the above ideas).

And Either MA or the License owners could sell clasified ads to create additional revenue.

What do you all think?

Not a bad idea...

possibly not daily... but weekly or monthly may be a good idea...
with more buildings introduced (newspaper headquarters) which could also be a place ofwork :p for other participants (printers.. delivery boys/girls etc lol)
new skills in paper manufacture (from the wood that is lootable ofc)

the possibilitesare endless (ma jus need to introducesome nice new things)

I clicked "yes" but have additions:

- It should be free. (no distribution cost and ads in it...)
- Maybe a weekly is enough
- Some fiction too! give us some more depth to the world.
- also perfect for announcing new events.
- No need to complicate it with bank models, Just do it, hire someone dedicated to run it, and recruit some of the excellent writers of the community for news and fiction.
- Make it "special" in the inventory, so you can pick up the pile and flip through the old issues... Or just replace it with the most current issue. Don't want to log in after being away for a while with your inventory filled up with old newspapers :)

No.

These things start out daily, then become every other day...then weekly...then monthly...then the Entropian ;)

Besides...how much news is generated every day? What could be worth 1 PED a day that isn't culled from EF or the Hall of Fame's anyway?

Classifieds might be nice, but they would become trash-talking rags. MA can't control offensive team names,so I don't trust them to control offensive classified ads in a few dozen languages.

Since MA has dropped the ball by largely abandoning the game's story-line (surely the easiest part of the "development" process, albeit not profit generating! ), I guess it sadly falls on us to make some news. I agree that daily news would be impractical unless you had a legion of reporters, but I really like the idea in concept.

btw guys, (cant directly address MA via forum post I think :scratch2:) It would only take a 10 minute break from the bank or "egg hatch" programming to brainstorm a few quick ideas that you could then develop over a few coffee breaks, and then upload onto the website. I vaguely remember Frank said some time ago that the story-line development would be revisited "soon". Maybe it was just a figment of my imagination, or perhaps simply another case of MA "whistling dixie"?

i have a better idea... simply craftable paper or books. ive raised this before. not just newspapers, but Guides, Society newsletters, Event schedules, flyers/ads and other player content could be created. scope for authors, reporters, designers, ad agents, sellers etc as new player driven professions.

I have to admit that there is a risk for the above to come true. That is why I think that the Licensed way to do it would be the better way to go.

For example. I truly enjoyed the Weekly Wednesday Who's Who article in the forum. But there has been only 3 of them (I think). If you add a monetary reason to keep up with such articles, then they would continue. If I were paying a PED a day (or week or whatever the case may be) then I can cancel my subscription and thus show the creators my disappointment. Not to mention competition driving the News Market.

I don't mean to speak ill of the forum, but this is a labor of love. If it were for profit, it would be organized, have deadlines, employees etc.

I think that there is plenty of news worthy activity in the Entropia Universe. And it could even branch out into the creative side, as a previous poster mentioned. Pay a PED for a well written serial, or novel. Doesn't even have to be Entropia related to publish.

In short, I disagree. I think the potential is worth exploring.

I like your idea of the daily newspaper thing. Perhaps if you could share some more ideas or topics to write about, perhaps I could try to develop ideas to publish to the EF frontpage.

Well, not daily, but weekly would be nice. If I had to read the newspaper daily I wouldn't have time to hunt.

Hello,

Unfortunately Frigid beat me to it - MA couldn't provide meaningful content for a monthly magazine - how are we going to fill a daily paper with anything that people want to read?

Also, The concept is sound and already in place in this forum. We have reporters and articles that get published on the main page.

So, sort out the content, make it significantly cheaper, get MA to implement a delivery system (think vehicles here) and then start up the business.

Or

Keep reading this and other forums.

I know what I'll be doing.

Let's see....
These Ideas could be used ingame or of EF.

Editorials. respected Avas giving their opinion on the state of EU, Professions, Price Speculations etc.

Ask an Expert: Have an expert panel field questions.

Real World News: The ingame papers could incorporate "News from the Home world." If others are like me, EU is taking up more and more time that I SHOULD be doing other things, like reading real world News Papers. Perhaps the EF Page could have news that affects EU. Like the Crashing USD, Internet Censorship in China, Taxation Legislation...

Freedom of the Press: Not a topic, but a benefit to private publishings would be the freedom from censorship and rules. (Obviously some censorship may be required in order to keep from spreading Hate or other libelous content.)

Anyone else have others?

I hear what you are saying. But to be stubborn, I think that a publication could narrow it down a little. My biggest pet peve with the forum system is that there is a lot of stuff that I don't want to read or simply disagree with. I often can't find the content I am looking for with the search. Thus a subscription to a publication of some sort could be a way of choosing the kind of content I want to read. I know I can subscribe to threads on the forum, but they will end and stray off topic.

For example, awhile back, I wanted to know how mining Amps worked. Do you know how many threads come up when you search for mining amps. Maybe I'm not very good at using the search, but it was a lot. So I asked in a thread. I got a few rude and unhelpful replies saying I should use the search.

There is another idea for articles. How tos, tips from the pros and how things work. Most publications in real life re-examine the same material many times. Ever read Mens Health, or Cosmo !? New people show up here and ingame all the time, and sometimes the same old topics will be discussed/examined again.

Anyway, enough from me. I'm enjoying the debate too much I think...

The potential was never in question. Sothing like this would be great but it takes a lot of labor and would require a lot of love.

I was just basing my opinion upon human nature. You can guess I view the glass as half-empty ;). I've seen dozens of these kinds of things start and fail in many games.

It's a pity.

Actually, one of the space-ship based MMO's does a REALLY good job of news, but it is generated by the company by paid employees. That same company/game also maintains a very good and "dynamic" storyline.

Anything is possible when people care, and when they don't care, money can make them.

Yes! I forgot to give credit where credit is due! Our reporters here make some very nice articles, and the posts from members are very informative.

Hey! We need an "EF Digest"! ;)

I like aridash's idea about craftable paper. That would be cool and a great idea, and as such, is unlikely to ever be implemented ;)

Its a nice idea but I don't think it would work. No one would pay for it and it would need too much development work/support from MA. Its hard enough to get people to write for something as infrequent as the Calypso Post let alone a daily.

My better idea would be that MA advertise the Calypso Post in game in order to draw more writers ;)

Yup, nobody said it's easy to get a team of daily writers.
Though, at ENN, we're planning to get enough writers to post at least one article (even a little one) every day.
Of course, we don't have enough writers right now.
We barely manage to publish an article every 1.5-2 weeks. :silly2:

Anyway, I'm quite sure the Entropian press will develop in due time and maybe some extra time/money investment. :D

weekly or monthly, maybe . . . not daily, gosh, lol
